An application server is software specialized for running some shared application. It is a software platform that provides basic services for the operation of the applications themselves, typically for enterprise software.
Practically all larger applications in companies (except those that run only on end devices) need their own application server. So each application typically has its own application server. For those application servers that run web applications, the name Web application server was adopted.
The application server provides basic services for running the applications themselves:
- it mediates operations between the software on the end device and the database,
- it provides application logic, the so-called business logic,
- it handles application operations between client software (front-end) and database (back-end), such as data routing, overall data orchestration,
- it ensures security (authentication, user permissions, data access),
- it provides search and storage.
Above all, it relieves the software on the end device and ensures that shared data on the server is safe and maintains high quality.
